History and Strategic Vision
Our History
The Uganda National Farmers Federation (UNFFE) was founded in 1992 as the umbrella organization for farmers’ groups, cooperatives, and associations across Uganda. It was established to bring together the diverse voices of farmers—smallholders, medium-scale producers, and large-scale commercial farmers—into one strong and united national platform.
In its early years, UNFFE focused on mobilizing farmers, strengthening local farmer organizations, and creating channels for dialogue with government and development partners. Over time, our mandate expanded to include policy advocacy, market development, training, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.
From humble beginnings, UNFFE has grown into a respected national institution, recognized for its role in shaping agricultural policy, empowering rural communities, and creating opportunities for farmers to compete in local, regional, and international markets. Our history is one of resilience, unity, and commitment to ensuring that farming remains a dignified, profitable, and sustainable livelihood in Uganda.

Our strategic direction is guided by the belief that agriculture is the backbone of Uganda’s economy and the foundation of rural livelihoods. We aim to:
Empower Farmers – Equip farmers with the skills, resources, and confidence to increase productivity and income.
Champion Policy Change – Advocate for laws and policies that protect farmers’ interests and promote agricultural growth.
Expand Market Opportunities – Connect farmers to local, regional, and global value chains.
Promote Climate-Smart Agriculture – Encourage sustainable farming methods that build resilience to climate change.
Strengthen Farmer Organizations – Build the capacity of farmer groups and cooperatives to operate effectively and competitively.
